One Day in the Hudson Valley: A Tarrytown Local's Playbook

Most guides to things to do in the Hudson Valley send you straight to the same five stops: Kykuit, Lyndhurst, Sunnyside, the cemetery, and Philipsburg Manor. They're all worth seeing eventually, but they're not how a local actually spends a day off. This itinerary starts and ends in Tarrytown, the way a real day here unfolds, with one detour that most visitors never find. Staying at The Sleepy Hollow Hotel puts you within walking distance of nearly all of it.

Start Where You Sleep: Saturday Morning in Tarrytown

Skip the hotel breakfast and walk into town instead. On Saturdays, the TaSH Farmers Market takes over Patriots Park from 8:30 a.m. to around 1:30 p.m., May through November, with dozens of vendors selling produce, bread, and coffee from within a hundred miles. It's about a 10-minute rideshare from the Sleepy Hollow Hotel. Grab a pastry, wander the stalls before the stroller traffic picks up, and let the morning set the pace for the day.

From there, walk toward Main Street for coffee. Coffee Labs Roasters, about a mile from the hotel, roasts on site and gets crowded fast once the farmers market lets out, so beating the rush is worth the early start.

A Waterfront Walk Before the Crowds

Before Main Street fills in, cut down toward the river. Pierson Park sits on Tarrytown's waterfront along the RiverWalk, with a splash pad, a bandshell, and open lawns facing the Hudson and the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge.

It's an easy 10-minute drive from the hotel. Early morning is the move here: the light on the water is better, the benches are empty, and you get the view without fighting for a spot along the rail.

The Detour Every Other Guide Skips

Here's where the day moves outward. Drive or rideshare about 15 minutes north to Rockwood Hall, a quieter section of the Rockefeller State Park Preserve separated from the main park by Route 9.

This was once William Rockefeller's 204-room summer estate, and while the mansion is long gone, its stone foundations, carriage roads, and open bluffs over the Hudson remain, with sweeping views of the Palisades that rival anything from the more famous estates nearby.

The loop trail runs about 2.4 miles and takes under an hour, and because it doesn't show up on most Hudson Valley things to do lists, you'll likely have long stretches of it to yourself. It's one of the better places to visit in the Hudson Valley if you want scenery without the ticket line.

Lunch Back in Tarrytown: Bibille's Bibimbap

Head back into town for lunch at Bibille on Main Street, about a mile from the hotel. Order the bibimbap bowl with purple rice, spicy pork, and Bibille's own house sauce stirred through at the table. It's fast, it's not trying to be fancy, and it's exactly the kind of low-key, high-flavor lunch a local actually eats between errands rather than a tourist-trap sit-down. Grab a seat outside if the weather holds.

Afternoon: Slow Down Along the River

With the detour and lunch behind you, spend the afternoon close to home. Walk the RiverWalk trail adjacent to Pierson Park, or simply post up at one of the benches along the water and let the afternoon pass without an agenda.

This is the part of a Hudson Valley day that guides built around checklists tend to skip, but it's the part locals actually protect. A slow afternoon by the river is as much a highlight as anything ticketed.

Dinner at the Hotel: Hudson Bistro's 12-Hour Brisket

Skip the walk back into town and stay put instead. Hudson Bistro, the hotel's own restaurant just off the lobby, is open Sunday through Thursday and worth the short trip downstairs on its own merits, not just for convenience. Order the 12-hour brisket. It's the kind of slow-cooked, fall-apart dish that takes real patience to get right, and it's become the thing regulars order without even glancing at the rest of the menu.

Grab a table by the fireplace if the evening has cooled off, or sit near the windows if you'd rather watch the last of the light fade over the grounds. After a full day covering Rockwood Hall's trails and Main Street's lunch spots, ending the night without a single extra step feels like the right call.

End the Day With Some Music

Close the night the way it started: back near the water. Check whether the Tarrytown Music Hall has a show worth catching, just a few blocks from the hotel. You're back within a short walk of your room by the time the night winds down.

That's the real shape of a day here: farmers market coffee, a quiet trail most visitors miss, a lunch that feels like a local's pick, and an evening that ends exactly where it began. It's proof that the best things to do in Hudson Valley don't require leaving Tarrytown behind, just knowing where to look.

Book your stay at The Sleepy Hollow Hotel and build your own version of this day from a room that puts all of it within reach.
